Strategy for the treatment of mixed astigmatism with Lasik.
Francesco G. Failla, MD, Filippo S. Simona,
MD (Locarno, Switzerland)
Purpose: To illustrate the strategy for the treatment of mixed astigmatism with a bitoric crossed cylinder ablation protocol and to evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of this treatment.
Method: The optical fundaments and the principles of a bitoric two step crossed cylinder ablation are explained and the method is compared with the classical monotoric ablation. Fourteen eyes have been treated with Lasik (Hansatome, Technolas 117C - 50 Hz Planoscan excimer laser) using this protocol. Preliminary results (follow-up less than 1 year) and vector analysis of a few cases are shown to illustrate the efficacy of the treatment.
Conclusion: The bitoric crossed cylinder ablation protocol allows effective treatment of mixed astigmatism with less tissue ablation and enlarges so the indications to cases who couldn't bee treated with monotoric protocol.
