Comparison of complications of the corneal flap
following LASIK by SCMD, LSK, BARRON manual
microkeratome

Pusan/SüdkoreaPurpose: To analyse of the corneal flap complications follo-
wing LASIK by SCMD, LSK, BARRON manual microkeratome. Me-
thods: 758 eyes were prospectively evaluated to assess the effects
on the frequency of complications, managements, postoperative
best-corrected visual acuity. The eyes were grouped by three
kinds of manual microkeratome used in making corneal flap.:
Group 1 (262 eyes), SCMD; Group 2 (256 eyes), LSK; Group 3
(240 eyes), BARRON. Results: Complications of corneal flap occur-
red in 11 eyes (4.2 %), 23 eyes (8.9 %), 8 eyes (3.3 %) of each group.
The intra-operative complications included incomplete corneal
flaps by microkera-tome out of order. : 1 eye (0.4 %), 1 eye
(0.4 %), 0 eye (0 %) and irregular corneal flap was observed only
in 1 eye of SCMD. The postoperative com-plication was extensive
lamella keratitis. : 8 eyes (3.1 %), 15 eyes (5.9 %), 4 eyes (1.7 %).
They were all stage 1. 2, so special treatment was not required.
Corneal wrinkle including micrwrinkle was found in 8 eyes
(3.1 %), 7 eyes (2.7 %), 3 eyes (1.3 %). Only one eye of LSK needed
reoperation and the others were just followed up. Epithelial in-
growth was observed in one eye of LSK, which was reoperated
after 1 month follow up. And another one eye in ! BARRON was
regressed spontaneously after 3 weeks. The postoperative best-
corrected visual acuity was decreased to above 2 lines in 5 eyes
(1.9 %), 2 eyes (0.8 %), 1 eye (0.4 %) of each group. Conclusion: The
incidence of corneal flap complications by microkeratome was
low relatively. There was no permanent visual impairment. And
furthermore, BARRON manual micrkeratome could be worked ea-
sily and had lower risk of complication when compaired with the
two others.
