Multifocal cornea for the treatment of
presbyopia
Lee DH
Durham (USA)
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of multifocal cornea by
excimer laser as a treatment of presbyopia. Method: There were 2
groups. Group 1 includes 36 eyes of 20 hyperopia patients and group
2 includes 36 eyes of 18 myopic patients. Preoperative spherical
equivalent was +0.85 +/- 0.51 in group 1 and - 4.82 +/- 2.49in group
2. Cetral corneal was used for far vision and peripheral corneal was
for the near vision. Distance visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity,
uncorrected and distance corrected nealr visual acuity were measured.
Results: 88% and 77% of eyes were within 0.5 D in group 1
and 2 respectively. Distance visual acuity showed that 34%, 53% of
eyes were 20/20 and 91%, 97% were 20/30 in group 1 and 2 respectively.
Near visual acuity showed that 75 and 83% of eyes were more
than J3 in group1 and 2. Contrast sensitivity was in normal range in
both groups. Conclusion: Multifocal cornea by excimer laser was
safe and effective method for presbyopia.
