Multifocal IOL’s mix and match
Min JCS
Hong Kong (China)
Purpose: To evaluate patient satisfaction and visual performance on
custom mixed multifocal IOL. Methods: From 01/2007 to 12/2007,
27 patients were implanted with one eye ReZoom®/Array (AMO) for
near, intermediate and distance vision and one eye Tecnis®MF
(AMO) for near and distance vision. The mean follow up period were
4 months. Patient satisfaction on custom mixed multifocal IOL was
evaluated by means of visual performance and subjective questionnaire.
Results: All of the patients had binocular uncorrected distance
visual acuity of 20/25 or better. For near VA, 82% of patients could
achieve J1 at 30 cm without the need for near glasses. For intermediate
vision, 71% of patients could achieve J5 or better at 67 cm. Only
5.6% of the patients required glasses for computer. None of them
required glasses for near and distance. The mean satisfaction rate
was 3.74 out of 5. In 10 patients with contrast sensitivity test done,
the mean postoperative binocular best corrected contrast sensitivity
(mesopic) for spatial frequency 3, 6, 12 and 18 cycles per degree
were 5.9, 4.7, 3.8 and 3.8 respectively. There was a decrease in contrast
sensitivity at high spatial frequency. The mean severity index
for halo and night glare was 2.2 and 2.3 (out of 5) respectively.
Conclusion: The overall performance of TecnisMF was better than
ReZoom/Array at near (30 cm) but ReZoom/Array performed better
than TecnisMF at intermediate (67 cm). Mixing and matching TecnisMF
with ReZoom/Array gives satisfactory visual performance at
all distances.
