Purpose: To compare functional near and intermediate vision of
patients after bilateral cataract surgery and intraocular lens (IOL)
implantation of ReZoom/ReSTOR, ReSTOR/ReSTOR, or ReSTOR/Re-
STOR blended ( 1.0D). Methods: A total of 44 patients were divided
into 3 groups based on the type of IOL implanted: Group A (mix/
match), Group B (bilateral ReSTOR), and Group C (blended ReSTOR).
Bilateral near and intermediate vision was evaluated without correction
and wearing the best distance correction using the NPReading
test. Reading speed, words per minute (wpm), at the different font
sizes was compared among the groups. Results: Uncorrected near
and intermediate vision of patients in group A (179.8 ± 42.2 and
173.3 ± 28.7wpm), group B (183.3 ± 38.0 and 174.6 ± 23.0 wpm), and
group C (179.3 ± 33.5 and 172.7 ± 28.9 wpm). Best distance corrected
near and intermediate vision of patients in Group A (189.2 ± 38.0 and
169.0 ± 35.3wpm), Group B (190.9 ± 23.5 and 168.8 ± 23.6 wpm), and
Group C (172.5 ± 38.2 and 153.5 ± 31.5 wpm). The number of subjects
that were able to read decreased as the font size decreased. Conclusions:
Overall, all the subjects read in a similar pattern (inverted-u
shape). Functional near and intermediate vision of patient in Group
B was slightly better when compared to those in Group A, and C. The
combination of bilateral ReSTOR is best for reading fine print.
