The Tecnis ZMA00 diffractive multifocal
acrylic lens and the advantage
of corneal
spherical aberration correcting IOLs

Purpose: To demonstrate the advantage of multifocal IOLs, designed
to compensate for the average spherical aberration of the cornea as
the new Tecnis ZMA00 acrylic diffractive lens. Methods: The performance
of different multifocal IOLs is studied in a model eye with a
physiological cornea. The influence of pupil size is demonstrated by
visualizing the light path and the retinal image in the different focal
points of the projection of a US Air Force target in monochromatic
green and in white light. Lenses to be tested are aspheric and spherical,
diffractive and refractive multifocal lenses like the full diffractive
Tecnis ZM900 and ZMA00 lenses, the apodized diffractive Acrysof
Restor SA60D3 and SN6AD3 lenses and the refractive ReZoom
NXG1 multifocal lens. Results: Multifocal IOLs that are corrected for
the average corneal spherical aberration and especially the hydrophobic
acrylate Tecnis ZMA00 lens show an optical behaviour that is
practically independent of pupil size. This is demonstrated for pupil
sizes of 3 and 5 mm. Conclusions: The Tecnis ZM multifocal lenses
are well equipped for patients in different light conditions.
